I set out to do a 40 mile ride this Saturday led by Ken Keller. It very quickly became clear that I was having difficulty keeping up the pace and the 40 miles would be a "bridge-to-far". I told Ken I expected to be dropped and did not want to hold anyone back. Ken and Jim Vanhorn quickly consulted and decided that Jim and I would ride as a group of "two" and Jim graciously let me set the pace (which turned out to average about 14.2 miles per hour over 29.5 miles.) I got my exercise in and enjoyed chatting along the way with Jim thanks to the graciouness which both Ken and Jim showed me. I think their actions are a testament to just what a wonderful grouip of people belong to the club. For my part, I am hoping to be permitted to lead some rides (20 - 30 miles) at about 14 miles per hour starting in April. I know of some great quiet country FLAT roads on the "other side" of the bridge where anyone interested in a releatively easy cruse that still gets in a good bit of exercise could join me and then work on getting the calories back at lunch before heading home.
