Can a bicycle be an agent of change?
Celebrate National Bike Month at NMWA!
“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”—Susan B. Anthony, 1896
This FRESH TALK features a conversation with engaged advocates for women and bicycles about the impact of the bicycle on women’s mobility and empowerment, past and present. Taking inspiration from the day’s earlier screening of the film Wadjda, speakers consider the bicycle’s ongoing role as an agent of social change that provides freedom of mobility for women around the world. Followed by a Sunday Supper served picnic-style.
Speakers include: Sue Macy, author of Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom (2011, National Geographic); Renée Moore, founder of Bicycling and the City; Nelle Pierson, Women & Bicycles founder, Washington Area Bicycle Association; Lia Seremetis, founder, DC Bike Party; Lyne Sneige, director of the arts and culture program, Middle East Institute; Najeema Washington, co-founder, Black Women Bike.
Reservations required. $25 for general admission; $15 for members, students, and seniors. Ticket price includes museum admission and Sunday Supper. Bike valet will be available; no bike shoes in the museum, please.
