"The Hell of the North" is the nickname for the famed Paris-Roubaix one-day classic world tour race, run this weekend. The course includes many centuries-old cobbled roads through NE France farm country. The Specialized Roubaix was developed for, and named after, this race, known for rough roads and weather. There's a cool movie of the race from 1976 with Eddy Mercxx (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2V3NdYCwMk), and this short film about the 2019 race https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgqWElr9SdU.
Rapha has been organizing "A Day in Hell" (ADIH) rides around the world on varied terrain, so everyone can get a taste of Paris-Roubaix.
Eric Veit will lead this ride, which tackles last year's ADIH course in reverse. 88 miles, a bit over 5200' of climbing. The route includes a cobbled street in Georgetown, a few miles of well-compacted gravel road in NW Montgomery County, and a climb up Sugarloaf Mountain. Don't be scared of the gravel, it should be dry and compacted with this week's forecast, and we rode it last year on 25 & 28 mm tires - but you can also detour around it if you want. Anticipate average speed of 15.5 to 17 mph.
Please wear your ABC jersey if you have one.
