Civil War Century Climbing Practice

Thinking about riding the Civil War Century (CWC) on 9/11, but not sure about the prospect of 7,000 feet of climbing? Do you like to ride up, up, and up some more? Leor Segev and Eric Veit will co-lead a 27+ mile ride for ABC members around the Camp David area, starting in Thurmont, MD. General plan is as follows:

• Park and leave from Thurmont Park (map) at 8:30am.
• Follow the Baltimore Cycling Club's recommended CWC training route, starting a few blocks away, including the 2 biggest climbs in the CWC:
• • First climb: 6.1 miles, 1,200 feet elevation, average grade 3.7%
  • Second climb: 2.8 miles, 900 feet elevation, average grade 6%

• From there we'll either...
• • Repeat the CWC loop again, or possibly in reverse, or
  • Climb Mt. Catoctin right by the entrance to Camp David, itself a 1350' climb featured in our annual ABC Black Friday ride (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34380363), or
  • Ride the flatter, rolling terrain to the east of Thurmont on some known routes, such as: 
  • Covered Bridge Quarter-Century: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30807276
  • Thurmont to Gettysburg half-century: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30807310, or
  • Say uncle, eat lunch, and go home.
• Speed? Your legs and lungs will determine that.  We'll regroup occasionally at turns to account for everyone. 
• We'll plan to do it the next day on Sunday if we're rained out.
