*** NEW DATE ***

I’ve been tracking the weather for Thurmont for the last few days and the percent chance of rain has remained fairly consistent at around 40-55%.  Plus it looks like there could be rain earlier that morning leaving the roads wet which isn’t something you want on a hilly course.  So I would like to postpone it for a week to next Tuesday, 6 October.  Normally I would wait until tomorrow for a final call on the weather but there’s been a death in my family and I’m headed to Boston tomorrow so I couldn’t make it anyway.  I hope everyone is still available next week.  The fall colors should be better!

The 4th Annual ABC Thurmont Covered Bridge adventure ride will be led by Jim Miner and is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, the 29th of September, with a rain date of 6 October.  So, hit the register button and put it on your calendars if you think you might be interested.

It’s a relatively short ride (36 miles) but makes up for it by being very hilly (2200 feet of climbing).  The course is very scenic with three covered bridges, a view of the mountains, hopefully some fall colors and roads which are very lightly travelled (at least on a weekday – the leaf peepers only come out on the weekend!). This ride starts in Thurmont Park, the same location where the Civil War Century starts.  From  the Bay Bridge, it’s about an hour and 30 minutes, so a bit less for many of you.  Start time will be 9:30.

Jim will have cue sheets so those who want to run ahead to the next covered bridge can do so, and the RidewithGPS route is here.   There are porta-potties at the start as well as a McDonalds once you get in Thurmont.  We’ll stop at each of the covered bridges for photos and to regroup.  Our main rest break will be at the middle covered bridge which has bathrooms but other than that we won’t be passing any stores or other facilities, so you’ll need to take water/snacks.  More logistics to be provided when available.
