AR Bear Pond Mountains

PLACEHOLDER. This ride explores the Bear Pond Mountain Range (yes, there is actually a range with this name in Maryland) west of hagerstown. Will likely spend time in PA as well. Details to be generated later...would be nice to stop at the misty meadow creamery....but south mountain may be too far away. Alternately, might make this ride one that climbs to the top of the south mountain, and the creamery is nearby :)

The Hagerstown 100 follows most of the route of the Cumberland Century, but with some modifications to allow for food stops at a few stores along the way vice the CC's planned rest areas.

The ride is 100 miles, 4500 feet of climbing with the purpose of trying to get some elevation in before the Culpepper 100 in October. The ride starts with the big climb of the day to get it out of the way - a 1.4 mile 300 foot climb. It then heads through the Antietam National Battlefield, and then meanders along the Potomac through the towns of Mercersville, Williamsport, and Pinesburg. After the 70 mile cut-off, the ride then heads north for a lengthy upward grind that looks like the Sudley's from fairhaven to SHS. The reward is the Misty Mountain Creamery - all ice cream made on site (and they sell farm animal toys too). Have a triple scoop of the apple strudel or pumpkin pie ice cream, because the climbing is almost done.  The last 5 miles is all downhill through South Mountain State Park and Greenbrier State Park.

Eat up at the ABC picnic for the energy to do this ride! If you end up not having enough energy, there is a shortcut to the car at mile 71 that cuts the ride to 73 miles. Start is at the Greenbrier Elementary School 21222 San Mar Rd, Boonsboro, MD 21713

Ride leader is Chris Higgins.

RideWithGPS route link. I don't know why the route says it is 5500'; the CC century which is mostly the same is 4500.

Planned rest stops:

27.7 Miles: Murray's Citgo / Rest at Potomac Park (28.5 miles)

50.9 McD's / Waffle house / Sunoco

67.4 Weis

71.4 Rico's Short cut to the car to end the ride early

82.4 Leitersburg Liberty

88.0 Misty Meadow Farm  Creamery

92.9 Rite Aid / Vince's Pizze / Skeeters Gun Shop (if needed)
