Women bicyclists from all over the Mid-Atlantic and beyond converge on Dorchester County to ride in the Wild Goose Chase Women's Bicycle Ride. Cyclists can ride along low-traffic scenic county roads in and around Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Since women's bicycling pioneer Georgena Terry created the event in 2008, the Wild Goose Chase has raised over $175,000 for the Friends of Blackwater, which has used the funds to support numerous Refuge projects. The Wild Goose Chase will be Sunday, September 13 with workshops on Saturday, September 12. Registration is limited to 250 people. The contact person for the 2020 ride: Kit Bradshaw, 443-521-5894, wildgooseride@gmail.com.

Registering for more than one category? Save time and hassel by creating a BikeReg profile before you register - it will copy your name, address, etc. when you register for The Wild Goose Chase and Sat.events. You can do so herehttps://www.bikereg.com/NewUser/NewMember/

WHAT'S HAPPENING SATURDAY

Bicycle mechanic workshops - we are offering 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon courtesy of Rockville Bike Hub. Nature Rides - led again this year by Sue Fischer, 2018 Friends of Blackwater Volunteer of the Year award winner. And our latest SATURDAY ACTIVITY - WHAT IS IT? Here's your chance to feed your inner naturalist. Ride to the Woods Trail and learn to use a key to identify 10 trees along the Woods Trail. Then hop back on your bike and ride to the Visitor Center where you will learn to use a GPS to hunt for clues that will identify animals found on the refuge. A scavenger hunt inside the Visitor Center is the culmination of your learning adventure! These activities are about 2 hours each, so beware of scheduling conflicts as you will not automatically be prevented from registering for events offered at the same time. If you have previously done one of these, kindly remember space is limited and there are others who have not had the opportunity.

THE RIDE

The Wild Goose Chase Bike Ride for Women takes place on and around Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge, MD, on the scenic  Eastern Shore. There are rides for women of all cycling levels (22, 31, 39, and 63 miles). The ride is on Sunday, and includes a buffet lunch, t-shirt, and other goodies with your registration fee.  We have SAG on each route and the best rest stops around that are staffed by awesome volunteers. 39 and 63 milers may start at 7:00 a.m. We ask, nicely of course, if others would wait until 7:45 a.m. to avoid congestion and aid with setting up rest stops. We are in an area affected by rising sea levels so be prepared to start a little later if there is water on the road in the morning.

ADDITIONAL INFO

On both days vendors and exhibitors of women-focused cycling apparel and gear will be offering their wares. Visit them from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until 4 p.m. at the education building on the refuge.

All registrations will be done online and the participant limit is 225 due to parking limitations at the refuge. That's correct, no same day registrations.

All communication regarding this ride will be done via email with the subject Wild Goose Chase-whatever info. We do not send emails unless we have something important to tell you, SO PLEASE READ THEM.

Would you like to buy a custom design 2019 Wild Goose Chase jersey? Sassy Cycling is designing and producing one! We will email you a link when the design has been approved.

Accommodation and dining option information is included in the confirmation email you will receive after registering.

This tour is a celebration of women’s cycling, but also a celebration of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge itself. Picture this: flat roads, no-to-low traffic, and pristine salt-marshes offering protection for migratory waterfowl in the Chesapeake Bay region. The area, once threatened by development, was the motivation for Georgena Terry to start the Wild Goose Chase in 2008. Established as a fundraiser to help protect the refuge, the Wild Goose Chase has generated over $175,000 for the Friends of Blackwater. Your participation in the 2020 event will help the Friends of Blackwater continue to protect this critical habitat, home to eagles, ospreys, migrating birds, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel, and other wildlife.

So, come to Cambridge and be a part of the celebration! It's a spectacular way to enjoy fall cycling while contributing to a great cause and an opportunity to meet and network with fellow women cyclists from all over the region.

See you in September,

Sue
