A memorial bike ride in memory of Irene “Rene” Szczesniak will be held on Saturday, October 1 at 9:00AM in Glen Burnie, MD. Riders are asked to assemble at the large parking lot behind Bruster's Ice Cream at 801 Aquahart Rd., Glen Burnie and the B&A Trail at 8:45AM to begin the 1.5 mile ride to the site where Rene was killed on June 6 while riding her bike on Central Ave. in Glen Burnie.
The parking lot is easily accessible by bike on the B&A Trail or by car. The ride will start north on the B&A Trail and then proceed up Central Ave after crossing Crain Highway.
A short ceremony will take place at the site located near 304 Central Ave, Glen Burnie, MD at about 9:20AM. Family and friends that are not able to ride may meet at the ceremony site. Following the short ceremony, riders will return to the start location.
Rene was an avid cyclist who rode regularly for transportation, fitness and for multiple causes like the AIDS Ride, MS, etc. She was an experienced, fit and safety-focused rider whose life was tragically taken by a truck driver while she was doing what she loved. The memorial ride will be both a tribute to Rene and to bring a public message of safety and respect to all road users – drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Riders of all abilities are encouraged to participate and should wear a helmet.
