Anacostia River Trail Networks

A new section of the Anacostia River Trail was opened in the fall of 2016, linking Washington DC's Anacostia Riverwalk trail to the Prince George's County network of trails. With the completion of this new 4 mile section of trail it is now possible to ride (or walk) trails from Nationals Stadium to the Bladensburg Marina and on to several trails in PG County.

The map below left was included in an article posted on Greater Greater Washington, a group that runs a very informative site about the greater DC metropolitan area. Link to the article.

Clicking on the map will take you to an interactive Google map of the trail system; on a smartphone or tablet the map will open in the Google Maps app - or at least it did on my iPhone.

The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation website includes this description of the new trail (link to source):

The new trail connects the Anacostia Tributary Trail System in Maryland to the Anacostia Riverwalk in Washington, D.C. It creates a network of over 40 miles of trail. The trail network links Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, National Stadium and eventually to the National Mall.

The last segment opened on October 31, 2016, with trail enthusiasts, US Senator Benjamin Cardin and US Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton in attendance to celebrate.

PG County Parks and Recreation has posted a video simulation of a cyclist traveling on the new section of trail:
